Description:

The Narrabundah Ballpark is Canberra’s professional baseball facility and is home to the Canberra Cavalry baseball team.

The Canberra Cavalry Baseball Team entered the Australian Baseball League (ABL) competition in November 2010. The ABL is run according to the guidelines set by the American Major League Baseball (MBL) organisation which stipulates playing field and spectator requirements.

The purpose of this project was to upgrade the Narrabundah Ballpark from a local baseball playing surface to a ballpark suitable for entry into the national competition.

Narrabundah Ballpark Field

Scope of Work:

The scope of works is as follows:

Conversion of part of the      infield playing surface to natural grass, included the removal of existing      “Dolorite” base, to be replaced with topsoil and irrigation;

Removal      and replacement of the existing chainmesh backstop netting with a      suspended drop netting and ancillary chainmesh fence;

Scoreboard frame structure;

Modifications to the      existing dugouts including demolition of the existing infrastructure,      services diversion and construction of new dugouts to meet ABL      Specifications;

Modifications to the outer      perimeter fencing infrastructure including security upgrade,      strengthening, padding and provision for screening;

Narrabundah Ballpark - View of Grandstand

Batter’s Eye screen and      Foul-ball Post construction;

Coordination of the      lighting upgrade carried out by another contractor;

Temporary traffic      management controls;

Environmental protection      measures;

Incidental works such as      raising the existing bleacher seating;

Concrete pavement      demolition and replacement;

Services identification and      diversions;

Subsoil drainage;

Water supply to the site,      including ActewAGL connections;

Irrigation upgrade of      controls, electrical connections and commissioning;

Landscaping of areas outside the Ballpark playing area.

Discussion:

This project had a very high emphasis on completing the works on time. The first game was scheduled to be played in just a few days following the project completion date. The project was successfully completed and the deadline met.

With the already tight program, the site experienced 11 rainy days which were dealt with adequately so as to enable continuation of work immediately on the following clear day.

The work carried out had to be of a high standard in order to meet not only the players and spectators expectations, but also the ABL, which received consultation from the American baseball organisation, the Major League Baseball (MLB). During the construction phase, representatives of the MLB visited the site on 3 occasions and approved both the construction method and the result.

The new facilities have improved safety and comfort for both player and spectator.

The Canberra Cavalry played their first home game on the 18th of November 2010 and were watched by 1300 spectators as they took their first win of the season.
